2008 Spa Francorchamps Grand Prix: 130,000 F1 fans greeted by RFIDEA and Psion Teklogix (International Version)

After a first satisfactory trial in 2007 at the VIP stand in Spa Francorchamps, the organisers of the Formula 1 race in Belgium decided to turn to RFIDEA, a designer of built-in RFID solutions, to deploy an innovative yet secure solution to greet and control the access of all the visitors coming to the circuit for the 2008 Belgium championship (5 to 7 September 2008). RFIDEA, which designed the solution, accomplished its mission along with its technological partners: Toshiba Tec for the printing of 300,000 tickets with RFID tags, and Psion Teklogix which set up and provided 80 WORKABOUT PRO handheld terminals equipped with a HF RFID reader.

More than 100,000 spectators, 50 types of access to be controlled…

A Formula 1 Grand Prix is a world-class event, a great motor sports festival, an outstanding commercial operation… and a tremendous headache for the organisers. In Spa Francorchamps, a legendary venue for motor racing, more than 80 access points must today be managed, with 50 types of access (VIP villages, exclusive areas for sponsors and teams, the paddock, the pit area, the spectator stands, the bends, etc.). Furthermore, the comings and goings of more than 130,000 excited spectators must be managed as calmly and efficiently as possible.A Formula 1 Grand Prix is a world-class event, a great motor sports festival, an outstanding commercial operation… and a tremendous headache for the organisers. The engineers from RFIDEA came up with the key to such serenity: the flawless, real-time management of information thanks to RFID tags integrated into the tickets. After the first developments and the first tests of all these technologies, the right industrial partners had to be found. For programming and printing the tickets, TOSHIBA TEC was put in charge. GERA IDENT was chosen to integrate the chips into the tickets. And as for the reader, it needed to be a reliable, rugged yet lightweight and ergonomic terminal that could unfailingly communicate with the database of a central server and offer long battery life for the daily reading of thousands of chips, without the slightest hiccup. RFIDEA thus chose the WORKABOUT PRO by Psion Teklogix, and signed a partnership with the terminal’s manufacturer. The WORKABOUT PRO is the real Swiss army knife of professional mobile computing and has proved its worth in many countries and various professional applications.
