Effective Flight-Line Management

Mercury Aviation Ltd. provides refueling services to dozens of airline companies at the Airport. On every shift, the shift manager receives detailed information about all airplanes that will be landing during the shift, including flight number, arrival time, parking location, and type of aircraft.

The integrated solution of Mobideo’s Guide and Psion’s rugged handheld computers enabled Mercury to improve the service they provide to the airlines, while making a more effective planning of tasks, and taking optimum advantage of the company’s resources

The Challenge

In the past, the work during the shifts was manual, with the refueling plan being prepared in advance on worksheets. The shift manager would send a technician to refuel the aircraft, and the latter would record the refueling details. At the end of each refueling, a representative of the airline signed a packing list approving execution of the work onsite.

This procedure created several problems:

 Complex task-management process

Difficulties prioritizing and allocating manpower to tasks

Management problems, especially during peak hours

Inability to monitor the work in the field and monitor the tasks’ status in real time

Mistakes and delays inputting data into the system, which caused errors in calculations and slowed the entire process

Lot of paperwork among field employees

 

A system was therefore required that would facilitate shift planning and prioritization of tasks while improving service and taking utmost advantage of the company’s resources. At the same time, it had to ensure compliance with strict schedules, with work procedures of several airline companies, and with the airport authority’s safety regulations.
