French speakers call her Josiane while Dutch speakers call her Marijke, as in the song by Jacques Brel. Who is she? She is the voice pronouncing transaction orders in the Vocollect headsets worn by the twenty or so operators who handle 40,000 parcels per month for wholesalers, hospitals and chemist’s stores in Belgium. This synthesized voice translates and transmits the data from the SAP R/3 WM module. This tireless operator “talks” and listens all day long and acts as an intermediary between the team working in the Sanofi-Aventis warehouse in Boortmeerbeek and Psion Teklogix’s TekSpeech middleware.
